The holiday season is in full swing, and if you are anything like most of us, you are probably busy with Christmas parties, holiday baking, and trying to track down the perfect gift for that impossible-to-shop-for relative.
With little time to fit in workouts, and lots of opportunities to over-indulge in Christmas cookies, eggnog, and seasonal treats, keeping in tip-top shape for your upcoming basic training may be the last thing on your mind. However, it is possible to have fun and stay fit this season! Instead of derailing all of your hard work and training for boot camp during this season of festivities, follow the below pointers to make time for fitness and health while celebrating with family and friends.
Squeeze in your workout first thing in the morning
In an article from U.S. News & World Report, trainer, Chris Freytag, recommends fitting in your holiday workouts first thing in the morning. He says this is the best way to ensure you actually workout and avoid getting distracted by more exciting holiday parties and dinners later in the day. Trying to improve your APFT run time, perfect your sit-ups, or increase the number of push-ups you can do? Be sure to carve out time as soon as you wake up to work towards these goals.
Make a fitness plan and stick to it!
With long trips to visit out-of-town relatives, holiday parties, and Christmas shopping, it can be hard to fit in time for workouts during the holiday season. This is why it is critical to schedule your workouts ahead of time. By laying out a plan that works with your busy schedule in advance, you are much more likely to stick to your workout schedule! Men’s Health recommends incorporating trips to visit relatives into your schedule as “recovery days,” fitting in workouts before and after.
As always, enjoy everything in moderation
When attending holiday parties and dinners it is okay to indulge in your favorite seasonal foods -just remember to enjoy in moderation. By sticking to one portion for meals, and watching your portion size with finger foods and appetizers, you can enjoy yourself while also watching your calories intake.
Consider enlisting the help of a friend
It is always easier to stick to a workout regimen if you have a partner in crime! By finding a workout partner, and making exercise plans together, you will be more likely to stick to your schedule. Knowing that you will be letting your partner down if you bail can be just the motivation that you need to stay on track. Plus, it is always more fun to workout with a friend or family member rather than all alone!
